The Island is a durational installation and exhibition unfolding over seven days on Salt Spring Island. Developed together and remotely over the past four months, this collaborative project brings together wood components, handwoven fabric, and knitted elements to create an interactive installation that explores the evolving relationships that develop between materials, ideas, and the artist’s shared practice.
Mima Eden is a visual artist born and raised in BC, Canada. With a deep interest in themes of labour, process, and repetition, her studio practice is rooted in traditional and contemporary textile practices. These include floor loom weaving, large scale knitting, handiwork, and sewing to create sculptural installations and wall pieces. Her work explores the use of unconventional soft materials, aiming to reimagine traditional textile patterns, experimenting widely with scale and materials. Her current practice, in collaboration with Matthew Robertson, brings together textiles and wood to create large scale sculptures and . Eden earned a BFA in Sculpture and Expanded Practices from Emily Carr University of Art & Design in 2003.
Matthew Robertson is a visual artist and horticulturist based between Vancouver and Chilliwack. Working primarily with wood, he creates installations, objects, sculpture, and furniture. His current practice, in collaboration with Mima Preston, explores the meeting point of wood and textiles. Robertson earned his BFA in Sculpture and Expanded Practices from Emily Carr University of Art & Design in 2005.
